Thailand Specialist and Purpose-Specific Visa Guide

If tourism, family, retirement, ordinary work, study, DTV, LTR, SMART and Thailand Privilege all sound wrong, you may need one of Thailand's specialist visa categories.

These routes are driven by the exact purpose and the Thai or overseas organisation supporting it. This page maps the territory. It does not replace the purpose-specific checklist in Thailand eVisa or instructions from the responsible Thai authority.

Rules checked: 3 September 2026. The MFA's central category page lists Transit visas and Non-Immigrant categories F, B, IM, IB, ED, M, R, RS, EX and O, plus diplomatic, official and courtesy visas. Newer eVisa descriptions may present the choice by purpose rather than expecting you to know a letter code.

Transit visas

Transit visas cover defined transit purposes, sports participation and crew situations described by the MFA. Merely changing planes does not always mean you need one. Whether you pass Immigration, collect bags, change airports or enter Thailand matters.

Ask the airline about the actual connection and check the official route for your passport. Do not apply for a transit visa solely because the itinerary contains Bangkok.

Media, journalism and film

MFA uses category M for certain film producers, journalists and reporters. Film work can also involve permits or coordination outside the visa process.

Your commissioning organisation, production company or relevant Thai authority should identify the correct route and provide its documents. A tourist visa is not the safe default merely because the finished work will appear overseas.

Research, science and specialist work

MFA lists RS for scientific research, training or teaching in a research institute, and EX for skilled or expert work. Some investment-promoted work sits under IB, while other specialist profiles may fit SMART or LTR.

The sponsoring institution and responsible agency determine the route. Compare the actual work, employer and endorsement rather than choosing the code with the closest name.

Religious and missionary activity

MFA lists category R for missionary or other religious activity with the agreement of the relevant Thai authority. Buddhist study can appear under ED in the general category description.

The religious organisation should coordinate the required approval and supporting documents. Ordinary retreat participation may belong to a different route, including a DTV activity when the current official conditions are met.

Medical treatment

Medical treatment appears in more than one part of Thailand's visa system. MFA's general page includes treatment within certain Non-O purposes, while the DTV includes specified medical treatment within its activity route.

That does not make the two routes interchangeable. The hospital or medical centre should confirm the expected treatment evidence and timing. For an ordinary short medical visit, check the eVisa purpose list and short-entry rules for your passport.

Investment and official duties

The older MFA code list includes F for official duties, IM for investment with relevant ministries and IB for investment-promoted activity. BOI-backed employment may also connect to Non-B, LTR or SMART.

Start with the government department, BOI unit, employer or project owner involved. These applications depend on institutional documents that a traveller cannot manufacture after choosing a category alone.

Diplomatic, official and courtesy visas

Diplomatic and official visas are issued on an official request for qualifying passport holders and duties. Courtesy visas are also based on an official request and supporting government or international-organisation documents.

If one of these applies, the sending organisation or responsible ministry should run the process. A consumer visa guide is not the deciding authority.

Other Non-O purposes

Non-O is an "other" category covering several very different circumstances. Beyond Thai family and retirement, the MFA description includes certain social-welfare, medical, sports-coaching and judicial-process purposes.

Each needs evidence from the organisation or person creating the legal basis. There is no honest universal Non-O checklist.

How to choose the right specialist route

Write down what you will physically do in Thailand.
Identify the Thai organisation, authority, employer or institution involved.
Ask it which current eVisa purpose and supporting approval it uses.
Start the official eVisa flow from your actual application location.
Use the checklist generated for that purpose and mission.
Check separately whether the activity needs a work permit, filming permission or another sector licence.
