Thailand retirement visa guide: Non-O, O-A, O-X and LTR
Compare Thailand's Non-O retirement extension, O-A, O-X, LTR wealthy-pensioner and paid long-stay routes before choosing.
There is no single Thailand retirement visa. The common options include a Non-O route followed by an extension based on retirement, an O-A obtained under its overseas rules, the nationality-limited O-X and the BOI LTR route for qualifying wealthy pensioners.
Most standard retirement routes begin at age 50, but their financial, insurance, application and reporting conditions are different. Do not let anybody collapse them into one table and tell you the only difference is price.
Rules checked: 3 September 2026. The figures and document methods used by Immigration and overseas missions can change. Confirm the exact route before moving money or buying insurance.
Routes to compare
| Route | Where it normally starts | Main distinction |
|---|---|---|
| Non-O plus retirement extension | Non-O entry overseas or an eligible in-country status process | Annual extension based on retirement |
| Non-Immigrant O-A | Eligible Thai embassy or consulate under overseas rules | Long-stay visa with its own health, criminal-record, financial and insurance evidence |
| Non-Immigrant O-X | Eligible mission or Immigration route | Long-stay route restricted to specified nationalities with higher conditions |
| LTR Wealthy Pensioner | BOI qualification endorsement | Selective income and insurance/deposit programme |
| Thailand Privilege | Paid membership application | Convenience route without a retirement age basis |
Non-O and a retirement extension
For many retirees, the practical route is a Non-O entry or eligible in-country Non-Immigrant application followed by an extension based on retirement.
The extension is the part that permits the longer stay. It normally requires the applicant to continue meeting financial and other Immigration conditions each year. The bank-balance, income and combination methods need to be checked against the current official list and the office handling the application.
Do not confuse the financial evidence needed for an overseas Non-O application with the evidence and timing needed for the annual extension.
Non-Immigrant O-A
MFA says O-A is for applicants aged 50 or over who want to stay for up to one year without working. Its published central requirements include criminal-record, medical, financial and insurance-related evidence, as well as applying under the nationality or residence conditions of the mission.
The official page publishes 800,000 baht, 65,000 baht monthly income, or a permitted combination as its central financial alternatives. Check the mission's current insurance and document wording before applying. O-A requirements should not be copied onto an ordinary Non-O retirement extension.
Employment is prohibited on O-A.
Non-Immigrant O-X
O-X is a longer-stay retirement route for applicants aged 50 or over from specified countries. The programme has higher financial and other conditions than the ordinary retirement routes, and the permitted stay is structured in stages.
Check the live nationality list and requirements on the official page. If your passport is not listed, wealth alone does not make the route available.
LTR Wealthy Pensioner
The BOI LTR Wealthy Pensioner route is a different programme with its own age, passive-income and insurance or deposit conditions. It can be very attractive for somebody who already fits the profile, but it is not the normal next step for every retiree.
BOI decides qualification before visa issuance.
Thailand Privilege
Thailand Privilege is not a retirement visa. It is a paid membership and long-stay arrangement that can suit somebody who values convenience, is under 50 or does not want to maintain a retirement basis.
It is expensive and does not automatically authorise Thai employment.
Financial evidence
This is where people make expensive mistakes. Different routes can ask for:
- money held in a Thai or overseas account
- monthly or annual income of a defined type
- a permitted combination of balance and income
- a minimum holding period before or after an application
- bank letters, statements or transfers in a precise form
Ask which legal route and which stage the adviser is describing. "You need 800,000 baht" is incomplete without that context.
Insurance
O-A, O-X and LTR have route-specific health or insurance conditions. An ordinary Non-O retirement extension should not inherit an O-A insurance rule merely because both are used by retirees.
Check coverage wording, insurer eligibility and policy dates with the authority that will decide the application. A policy marketed as "retirement visa insurance" is not proof that it meets your route.
Applying inside Thailand
Immigration publishes purpose-specific lists for some applicants seeking Non-Immigrant status from a tourist or exempt stay. Availability depends on the current permission, remaining time and evidence.
Read the change-of-status guide and visit the responsible office early. Do not assume you can arrive visa exempt, wait until the final week and fix everything locally.
Ongoing obligations
Depending on route, you may need:
- annual or route-specific extensions
- 90-day reporting
- a re-entry permit before leaving
- continuing financial or insurance evidence
Check the permitted-until date and every endorsement in the passport. Paying an agent does not transfer the legal consequences of overstay to the agent.
Can you work?
Retirement-based permission is not a work route, and MFA explicitly prohibits employment on O-A. If you plan to work, run a Thai business or provide services in Thailand, compare Non-B, SMART, LTR and DTV based on the actual activity.
Common mistakes
- Calling every route "the retirement visa".
- Buying O-A insurance for a different route without checking.
- Moving money too late or using the wrong evidence method.
- Assuming an overseas visa guarantees an annual extension.
- Leaving without a required re-entry permit.
- Starting work while staying on a retirement basis.
- Choosing the longest headline validity instead of the route you can maintain.

The best retirement route is normally the one whose ongoing conditions you can meet comfortably, not the one with the grandest name.
