Thailand visa extension guide
An extension of stay is a separate Immigration application. The reason, current permission and local checklist determine what happens next.
What most people call a "visa extension" is usually an application to extend their temporary permission to stay. It does not make the original visa valid for longer, and it is not automatic.
Rules checked: 3 September 2026. Immigration uses purpose-specific extension criteria and document lists. TM.7 is the standard application form for an extension of temporary stay, but the form is only one part of the application.
Start with the permitted-until date
Find the date Immigration gave you, not merely the expiry printed on the visa. That permitted-until date is the one an extension must protect.
Apply with time to fix a missing bank letter, copy, photograph or supporting document. Public holidays and local queues do not pause an expiring stay.
The reason controls the extension
Immigration publishes different requirements for tourism, employment, family, retirement, education, medical treatment and other reasons. A document used for a tourist extension does not establish a retirement or family extension.
Common parts of the process can include:
- TM.7 and a recent photograph
- passport and copies of relevant pages
- proof of address or accommodation
- evidence supporting the extension reason
- the official application fee
- additional local-office forms or acknowledgements
Use the office's current checklist. This is one of the areas where a pile of old photocopies can look impressively prepared while still missing the only document that matters.
Tourist and short-stay extensions
The extension available after a tourist visa or eligible exempt entry depends on the scheme and current Immigration policy. Do not assume every short entry receives the same extra period.
Check the tourist visa guide or exemption and VOA guide, then confirm the current extension route with Immigration.
Long-term extensions
Employment, family, retirement and education extensions rely on continuing evidence:
- employer and work documents for employment
- relationship and financial evidence for family
- financial and route-specific evidence for retirement
- institution and study evidence for education
An extension granted last year does not guarantee the next one. Requirements, evidence and circumstances can change.
Online e-Extension
Immigration advertises e-Extension for selected categories. The online service can begin the application, document and appointment process, but it does not cover every route or remove Immigration's decision.
Use only the service linked by an official Immigration page. Check the category, office coverage and service charges before starting.
After approval
Before leaving the counter:
- Check the new permitted-until date.
- Check any under-consideration or return date.
- Ask whether 90-day reporting applies.
- Check whether you need a re-entry permit before travel.
- Keep the receipt and a copy of the application.
An extension does not automatically include re-entry permission.
If the application is refused or delayed
Follow the written instruction and dates given by Immigration. Do not assume that filing an application creates unlimited lawful stay while you decide what to do.
