Thailand Non-B visa and work guide

Thailand visa and entry stamps in a passport

The Non-Immigrant B visa is the usual starting point for Thai employment and business, but the visa and permission to work are separate.

3 min read

The Non-Immigrant B visa is the usual starting point for ordinary employment or business activity in Thailand. It gets confused with the work permit so often that it is worth saying this immediately: the visa and permission to work are separate.

Your employer or Thai business is central to the process. If somebody offers to arrange a "work visa" without being able to explain the job, employer and work-authorisation route, step away.

Rules checked: 3 September 2026. Thailand's Department of Employment operates the e-WorkPermit system. The exact visa and work-permit evidence depends on the role, employer, applicant and application location.

Who needs a Non-B

Non-B covers several business and work situations, including:

  • employment by a Thai company, school or organisation
  • conducting business or attending qualifying business activities

Investment-promoted employment may instead use Non-IB, and MFA also describes a separate B-A business-approved category. These are related routes, not interchangeable names for Non-B.

Not every business visit is employment, and not every paid activity follows the same route. Ask the Thai organisation what it is sponsoring and which current checklist applies.

Employer approval, visa and work permission

MFA's central guidance says a Non-B holder who wishes to work must receive work permission before starting work. The Department of Employment controls the work-authorisation process.

The normal sequence for ordinary employment is:

  1. The employer prepares its corporate and employment evidence and obtains the pre-entry labour approval required by the handling mission.
  2. The applicant uses that approval and the employer's documents for the Non-B application.
  3. After entry, the employer and applicant complete the work-permit process. The visa and pre-entry approval alone are not permission to start work.
  4. The holder later applies for any extension of stay connected to the employment.

The sequence can differ for BOI, SMART, LTR, urgent work, teachers and other regulated situations. Follow the authority responsible for your route.

For example, Kuala Lumpur's employment checklist asks for a WP32 labour-approval letter for general employment. Older MFA guidance uses WP3. Ask the employer and handling mission which current approval and form apply; do not choose a form from an old application story.

Employer paperwork

A genuine employer normally provides much of the difficult material. MFA's published guidance includes items such as an employment or invitation letter, contract and company records. The current eVisa or mission checklist may use updated form names and ask for additional evidence.

Before accepting a job, ask:

  • Which visa purpose is the employer sponsoring?
  • Who handles the e-WorkPermit submission?
  • When are you legally allowed to start work?
  • Which costs does the employer pay?
  • What happens to your immigration and work status if the job ends?

"We do this all the time" is reassuring only when somebody can also show you the actual process.

Applying outside Thailand

An overseas application normally begins through Thailand eVisa from the applicant's current location. Select the correct mission and upload its required personal, employer and business documents.

MFA's general material often describes an initial stay of up to 90 days for a Non-Immigrant entry. Check the permitted-until date on arrival. The visa's validity is not the same as the stay Immigration grants.

Changing status inside Thailand

Some applicants can apply to change from tourist or visa-exempt status to a Non-Immigrant category inside Thailand. This is not available for every case and normally requires substantial time left on the current permission.

Read our change-of-status guide and get the exact current checklist before relying on this route. An overstay can make a status-change application unavailable.

The work permit

The work permit or other applicable work authorisation ties the permission to defined work and circumstances. Do not assume it covers a different employer, role or location without checking.

The Ministry of Labour also publishes occupations prohibited or restricted for foreigners. The English translation is useful, but the Thai legal text controls. Professional licences may be required separately.

Business visitors

MFA also describes Non-B routes for conducting business without taking employment. A published three-year multiple-entry Non-B exists for qualifying business visitors, but MFA explicitly says it does not authorise employment.

This is a good example of why the letter on the visa is not enough. The approved purpose and work-permission position matter.

Extensions, reporting and travel

Long-term employment commonly involves:

Keep copies of submissions and check every stamp or digital record. Your employer may manage the paperwork, but the overstay lands in your passport.

If the job ends

Employment, work permission and an employment-based extension are connected. When the job ends, the employer may need to cancel or notify parts of the status and the employee may have little time to arrange another lawful basis.

Get the cancellation sequence and dates in writing before the final working day. This is a situation for the employer, Immigration, Department of Employment and a qualified adviser, not a guess based on somebody else's resignation.

Common mistakes

  • Starting work after receiving a visa but before receiving work permission.
  • Assuming the employer has filed something because it says it will.
  • Working outside the approved role or organisation.
  • Using a business-visit visa for employment.
  • Waiting until a job ends to ask what happens to the stay.
  • Confusing a work permit expiry date with the immigration permitted-until date.

Official sources

The employer and authorities handling your case must confirm the exact sequence before work begins.
